Mix Crates
A DJ is only as good as his tunes.
For the community to DJ their own mixes they need tunes and to share maps, the songs have to be shared.
To make this work long term, we need to add legally shareable music to the game as often as possible.
Successful musicians don't usually wish to give away their work for free.
Here are some of the ideas we have had to acquire music and add new game content for our community to enjoy.
Genre mix crates contain content from different artists.
Album mix crates contain content from a single artist.
Mix crates are not loot boxes or battle passes - no gambling or grinding, you get:
- New tunes in-game to mix with any others in your collection.
- New mixes made with those tunes to provide new playable levels for gamers.
- A DJ quality audio soundtrack for use outside of X-Fader.
- New game content themed to the crate.
We will release free mix crates whenever possible.
It will take development resources to prepare and test them.
We could create a community council of musical representatives of different genres to ensure quality (I cannot judge K-pop for example).
We could create paid mix crates and give a percentage of the profit to the artists.
We could ask artists to contribute at least 1 track to the council for release in the free mix crates.
We could hold submission events for artists to send their tunes to the council for creating free and paid mix crates.
We could fund the council to give artists a single upfront payment rather than have to wait on DLC revenue for paid crates.
We could have awesome talented community members that donate their music or help motivate artists to do so.
The council could recruit DJs / players from the community to do the mixes in the mix crates and reward them.
The council could recruit level designers and visual artists from the community to work on the mix crates game elements.
Mix Crate Revenue Split.
A music only version of the mix crate can be marketed and sold on music platforms such as spotify and bandcamp providing further revenue and exposure.
Net Revenue distribution.
X% Developer X% Artists to be discussed.
Genre Crate example.
70% divided equally per song for the song creators 14 songs = 5% per song
15% divided equally per mix for the DJs 3 mixes = 5% per mix
15% divided equally per mix for the game designers 3 levels = 5% per level
Album Crate example.
It's up to the artist.
The dev team will support the artist where possible.
We also aim to connect community members with different skills to support the content creation process.
The council will also help I hope.
I'm very keen to get feedback on these aspects from all parties involved and to explore how to do this right.
